The Race of the Century – Tall Ships Race

The training ships Danmark and Georg Stage take part in the historic Cutty Sark Tall Ships’ Race. We follow them closely in port and during the 480-nautical-mile voyage from the Shetland Islands to the final port of Aalborg.

There is sea spray, strong winds, and seasickness on board the two Danish training ships as Chroma follows the students in their daily work on deck and high up in the rigging.

There are moments of joy, when students receive letters from family and loved ones they have not seen for months, a solar eclipse, and strong camaraderie. And there are conflicts with the officers, dramatic tacking in heavy weather where things nearly go wrong. Several students also make fateful decisions along the way about their future lives at sea.
In the final port of Aalborg, distinguished guests await. Crown Prince Frederik comes on board Georg Stage and Danmark.

When broadcast on DR1 in 1999, the three programmes were watched by a total of 2.1 million Danes.
